About Our Kitchen

SEN-ED Kitchen offers a bespoke education to suit our student’s needs. This can include a curriculum that covers foundation educational goals such as literacy and numeracy, in addition to more focused academic tutoring, thematic sensory based learning, cooking, social skills, communication and strategies to support regulating and emotions. Each week within the alternative provision is allocated a theme/focus linked to the National Curriculum with a range of age and ability appropriate activities available for students to access. Learning at SEN-ED Kitchen is done with a kinaesthetic approach as this is more conducive to our learners and their preferred learning style.

SENSEsational® Learning describes our kinaesthetic and multi-sensory approach to learning and education within SEN-ED Kitchen. This is more conducive to our neurodiverse learners and their preferred learning styles.

SEN-ED Kitchen aims to nurture and support students with a student-centred approach, enabling them to build their confidence, make progress and thrive. When working with students, we work to meet their needs using an approach based upon Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. We understand that until our student’s basic needs are met and they feel safe, they are unable to fulfil their higher needs. Therefore, a more holistic approach to learning and education is taken by our provision.

Regular reviews and consultations with both parents/carers, and the school and/or local authority responsible for their education, are held to ensure progress is being made, and that student attendance and engagement is good. Clear next steps are outlined in Termly Outcome Plan (TOPs) Targets as a focus for the weeks that follow.

SEN-ED Kitchen provision is suitable for students who have autism, ADHD and/or sensory processing profiles. We also support children who have communication challenges.

Please note, that SEN-ED Kitchen is a non-contact or physical restraint alternative provision, so is unable to accept students who may require holds to support with regulation when heightened. Equally as a non-secured site, SEN-ED Kitchen cannot accept students who are likely to abscond when heightened. Risk assessments are produced for each student attending the provision and these are regularly updated and share with parents/carers and professionals involved in the student’s education journey.

Sessions can range from an hour to 4 hours in length, with the option to be attended 1:1 or in a group setting. Group sessions are up to a maximum of 4 students with up to 3 staff supporting, but this is determined by the needs of those students within the session.
